Members,
As you may know, we experienced a database failure on the NAVCOPS
Network website in December and were not able to recover the message
board data. I apologize greatly for that.
This brings us to the issue of the future of the NAVCOPS Network as we
are entering our 15th year serving the Naval law enforcement community.
Either we will evolve into something new, or we will decommission
ourselves in favor of the many technologies that exist now.
When we started in 1996, there was no Facebook, Twitter, FBI's "Law
Enforcement Online"/LEO, NavySecurityNet, etc. Nor was there any real
place for those in this community to network or gain information. Now,
there are lots of places. That is both good, and bad, because you have
access to more networking and information, yet it is not all in one
place (and often not that secure).
I do not want NAVCOPS to be just another social networking site. It has
to be something useful, unique, and beneficial. What this is, I do not
know, yet would appreciate feedback and ideas.
Another issue is security. I'm concerned with the attacks on commercial
and government websites by foreign countries. I am unable to produce
government level security on a commercial server, so what we do on
NAVCOPS needs to be reviewed.
The ideal solution would be for a secure Military version, of which I
would offer my ideas and experience to the Navy/NCIS if they are
interested.
A final factor is time and passion. I've been working independently on
NAVCOPS for the entire run to include design, management, technical,
etc. and that becomes quite exhausting. I've been lucky to have some
great moderators on the forums, members who have given great feedback
and materials for the site, and those who have written articles and I
would like to thank them for all their hard work through the years.
Finally, thank you to the thousands of Navy, Marine, NCIS, Coast Guard,
Federal/State/Local law enforcement professionals that have made NAVCOPS
a fantastic place to be. You are some of the finest people and
professionals I know.
Feel free to email me directly or reply here any ideas or thoughts you
may have. Let's see what 2011 holds in store for NAVCOPS.
